Or a complete cease and desist. With any journey towards mastery, there will be challenges that require one to adapt their training. And sometimes that means that some of that training has to stop completely. That doesn’t mean the training stops however.
Case in point. Back in August, I was noting an issue with my shoulder when it came to pushups, so I reduced the amount that I was doing. Unfortunately, about 3 weeks ago, I had to stop them completely. I have a lot of pain at this time when it comes to day-to-day activities and doing push-ups is going to set me back even further. The smart thing to do is to stop as much as I don’t want to. But I am still able to hold a plank for a short amount of time. I can hold a bridge.
I have been working on some Tai Chi ideas that involve maintaining shoulder mobility and so far I can still practice without pain. I am listening to my body though, so when I do feel it, I can check to see what it is that I am doing and either stop or modify.
I’m at a point in my life where I am not healing as quickly as I used to, and my body doesn’t have the same resources it used to. Again, that means that I have to proceed with caution. I have to listen to my body.
I have had many, many injuries over the years, and every time has provided me with amazing learning opportunities. And this one is no different. Frustrating sometimes? Yes. Annoying? Yes. But a blessing in disguise all the same. It is allowing me to explore some other aspects of my training and that is always a good thing.
